Working with OEMs

For Packaging Machinery OEMs

Specialist denesting without adding another project to manage.

PiP works with packaging machinery OEMs and system integrators to incorporate specialist denesting, feeding and lidding equipment into new and existing production lines.

Sometimes we provide equipment for an OEM that does not manufacture its own denesting systems. On other projects, we work alongside OEMs that have their own denesting technology but involve PiP where a tray, material or application requires more specialist experience.

Either way, our approach is the same. Give us responsibility for our part of the line and we will make the integration as straightforward as possible.

More than supplying a machine

Successful integration starts long before the equipment arrives on site.

PiP can work directly with the OEM, end user and packaging supplier from the early stages of a project, helping to establish the machine configuration, product handling requirements and line interfaces before manufacture begins.

We provide 3D STEP models so that our equipment can be incorporated into the OEM’s overall line design and agree the mechanical, electrical and control interfaces required for installation.

Where the packaging itself presents a particular challenge, we can also work directly with the tray or packaging manufacturer to understand the material, tolerances and denesting characteristics.

This takes much of the detailed application work away from the OEM and avoids them having to act as the intermediary for every technical conversation.

We take responsibility for the PiP equipment

Our involvement does not stop when the machine leaves our factory.

For new-line installations, PiP engineers work alongside the OEM’s installation and commissioning team on site. We take responsibility for commissioning our equipment, establishing reliable operation with the surrounding production line and training the operators and engineers who will use and maintain it.

After installation, we continue to support the machine directly with technical assistance, servicing and replacement parts. One less part of the line for the OEM to manage.

When denesting becomes the difficult part

Tray denesting can appear straightforward until the packaging itself makes it difficult.

Closely nested trays, inconsistent materials, lightweight fibre formats, unusual flange designs, limited denesting features and changes in tray geometry can all turn a simple handling operation into a significant production problem.

This is where specialist experience matters. PiP is regularly involved in applications where conventional denesting approaches have struggled. Often, the answer is not an elaborate bespoke machine. It is understanding the tray, selecting the right denesting principle and developing the correct tooling for the application.

Even manufacturers with their own denesting technology involve PiP when an application needs specialist tray-handling expertise.

Working with packaging machinery OEMs

PiP has developed long-standing working relationships with packaging machinery manufacturers and system integrators across the UK and internationally.

We have supplied PiP equipment directly to OEMs and system integrators including AMP Automation, Bradman Lake Group, Cama Group, IMA Food UK & Ireland, Ishida Europe, MULTIVAC UK, Paramount Packaging Systems, PFM Packaging Machinery, Proseal (JBT), Redpack Packaging Machinery, Sealed Air, The Food Machinery Company, ULMA Packaging, Videojet, Yamato Scale Dataweigh UK and Yorkshire Packaging Systems.

These relationships cover tray sealing, flow wrapping, weighing, cartoning, robotics and complete line integration.

Our independence is important. PiP is not tied to a particular tray sealer, wrapper, weighing system or line technology. We concentrate on our specialist part of the project and work with whatever equipment surrounds it.

Experience integrating with other manufacturers’ equipment

PiP machines have also been successfully integrated with production equipment from manufacturers including Packaging Automation, GHD Hartmann, Bilwinco UK, Gerhard Schubert GmbH, Record Packaging, MPE and Syntegon Technology. Our machines have also been mounted on, over and alongside conveyors and production lines from dozens of different conveyor and line-system manufacturers.

Whether the PiP machine forms part of a completely new production line or is being added to existing equipment, we work with the relevant parties to establish the mechanical layout, product transfer, control signals and interfaces required.

Who buys the machine does not change how we work

Not every project follows the same commercial route. Sometimes the OEM purchases the PiP machine as part of the complete line. On other projects, the end user purchases our equipment directly.

Where a PiP machine is being installed as part of a new OEM line, we work with the OEM throughout the project regardless of who places the purchase order. We coordinate drawings, interfaces, signals, installation and commissioning so that the PiP equipment becomes part of the overall production line rather than a standalone machine that somebody else has to integrate.

Commercial terms are also available for OEMs purchasing PiP equipment as part of their own machinery projects.

From line design to ongoing support

Our OEM support can include:

  • Application review and machine selection
  • Liaison with the end user and packaging supplier
  • Tray and packaging testing
  • 3D STEP models for line design
  • Mechanical and product-transfer interface information
  • Agreement of electrical and control signals
  • Coordination with the OEM engineering team
  • Joint installation
  • PiP commissioning
  • Operator and engineering training
  • Ongoing technical support, servicing and spare parts

The objective is straightforward. You manage the complete production line. We take responsibility for our part of it.
