Packaging materials

Plastic. Foil. Card. Fibre. Whatever comes next.

Packaging changes. The need to feed it reliably does not.

PiP develops denesting and feeding equipment around the behaviour of the packaging, not around a preference for one material.

That means supporting established plastic and foil formats while continuing to develop solutions for card, fibre, moulded pulp and other lower plastic packaging.

Established packaging still matters.

Plastic and foil remain major production formats.

Many food manufacturers continue to run plastic, RPET and foil trays because they are proven, efficient and appropriate for the product and process.

PiP has extensive experience automating these formats and will continue to support them as materials and specifications evolve.

New materials create new handling problems.

Fibre, board and moulded pulp packs can bring greater friction, porosity, dimensional variation, moisture sensitivity and inconsistent nesting.

Those characteristics can expose weaknesses in equipment originally designed around consistent thermoformed plastic. PiP’s experience, test capability and in-house engineering allow us to work with these new formats without abandoning the established ones.

Materials we run

Configured around the material, proven on the rig.

Plastic and RPET

Thermoformed trays and pots, the established backbone of chilled food production.

Foil

Smoothwall and wrinklewall foil trays, including large formats.

Card and board

Board trays, base cards, U-boards and formed board formats.

Fibre and moulded pulp

Compressed fibre and moulded pulp trays, where variation and porosity demand careful handling.

Barrier-lined paperboard

Barrier-lined paperboard trays, including MAP and Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP) formats.

Our ongoing R&D programme takes us into new applications and new packaging materials as they emerge.

Quick answers

Can sustainable packaging be automated reliably?

Usually, yes, but not by assumption. Fibre, board and moulded pulp trays behave differently from plastic: they can warp, vary, stick together and lock in the stack. We test the actual tray on our in-house rig before any machine is specified.

Does PiP only work with sustainable packaging?

No. Plastic, RPET and foil remain major production formats and we automate them every week. Our equipment is developed around the behaviour of the packaging, whatever the material.

My packaging is changing material. Will my line cope?

Send us the new pack. We can test it, tell you how it behaves and advise whether your existing machine needs new tooling, adjustment or a different approach, before the change reaches your production line.

Send us the packaging. Give us the problem.

Whatever the material, we will run it, record the trial and tell you what we think.
